Independent Living Service Center
(ILSC)

The ILSC is a Center for Independent Living funded by a grant from the Department of Education. ILSC is a satellite of the Washington Coalition of Citizens with Disabilities (WCCD). The ILSC is located in the Everett, Washington USA and serves residents with disabilities of Snohomish County who need Independent Living services.

The Center works to make sure that people with disabilities are assured of their human and constitutional rights by promoting public understanding and acceptance of disability, and supporting civil rights. The ILSC operates under the Washington Coalition of Citizens with disABILITIES (WCCD) and is a nonprofit organization supported by grants, memberships, volunteers and donations.

 


Information and Referral

The ILSC provides Information and Referral in the areas of Personal Assistance Services (PAS), transportation, housing, peer support, and the Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA).

Staff are trained to answer the phone and respond to basic Information and Referral calls and are able to use practical knowledge combined with personal experience to assist persons in locating the appropriate resources.

Skills Training

Self Advocacy

ILSC offers skills training to persons with disabilities. Self-advocacy is at the heart of being able be independent. Skills building focuses on stating you needs clearly and effectively in order to obtain your goal, whether that goal is to talk with your doctor, hire and manage a Personal Assistant, apply for services, schedule or access transportation, interview for employment or get involved in political issues. Through self-advocacy we become better communicators and are better able to provide input into decisions that affect our lives.

Personal Assistance Services (PAS) ...who needs it?

  • you may have a disability from an injury or illness, recent or long term
  • you may have a family member or friend who needs this type of assistance

Internet Training

Skills training is available for person who would like to learn how to access the Internet. The ILSC has computers available for use by consumers whether to use it to create a resume or to surf the Internet.

Advocacy

The individuals at the ILSC are involved with disability issues on both the national, statewide and local levels to create changes to enhance independent living. Interest evolved for individuals as they went through their own personal experiences.
